"What is a Carrier Oil?"
  • Carrier oils are used in massage oil/lotions and in natural cosmetics.
  • Carrier oils  allows you to apply essential oils to a much larger area of the body, requiring only a small  amount of essential oils.  Which is beneficial to your body, and your essential oil budget.
  • Each Carrier Oil has distinct characteristics, such as color, viscosity, and penetration speed.
  • Carrier Oils also have therapeutic properties and generally contain components such as fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients that improve the look and feel of skin and hair by adding moisture, soothing irritation, and reducing the effects of dryness. The choice of a Carrier Oil is dependent on the desired result.

"Why Use Carrier Oils?"

Many people choose to use essential oils “neat”, which means undiluted. However, this is sometimes NOT the best method of application every person or even every time.   Below are a few of the reasons why you may want to consider diluting essential oils with a carrier oil.

  • Essential oils are very potent, so you only need a very small amount to reap the many benefits. Even the mildest of essential oil, is very concentrated, so there are times when even one drop is more than enough; therefore diluting with a carrier oil is often the best option for many.
  • Carrier oils allow you to apply your essential oils to a larger area of your body, while using very little essential oil per application.
  • Carrier oils are especially important to use, if you’re applying  to the more sensitive areas of the body, if you have overall sensitive skin and when applying to children.
  • Combining carrier oils and essential oils to create body moisturizers, massage and sports rubs, facial cleansers and even skin toners is not only fun to do, but it also helps you budget your essential oils. From roller and spray bottles, to creams and lotions, you can find recipes that make enough for multiple applications.  For your convenience, we have several recipes right here on our Rooted in Wellness website.
